A knowledge management exercise in the domain of sentencing: towards an XML specification

Nowadays the amount of legal texts necessary for the execution of legal tasks is growing rapidly. A well-known problem is the retrieval of the right text at the right moment. A solution to this management problem could be the use of knowledge management (KM). In this paper we claim that as part of KM, the development and application of legal ontologies with the help of a mark-up language like the eXtensible Mark-up Language (XML) is useful. KM research is taken as a starting point to structure legal texts in the domain of sentencing. After defining a KM model and a sentencing model, a first step towards the structuring of legal texts is taken by integrating these two models into one model. Finally, an example is given of how XML can be used to structure legal texts on the basis of the described integrated model.
